| Welcome to our Burning Man experience. On labor day weekend in 1997, we (Adam & Stacie) went to our first Burning Man. We had read about it in Wired and Time and after exploring others' past experiences and photos on the web, we decided that this was for us. Since then, we rerturned in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 for more fun, craziness and enlightenment in the desert.
Burning Man takes place north of Reno in the Black Rock Desert. On a mostly barren playa in the middle of nowhere, about 20,000 people (now 35,000) come out for a week to celebrate life, art, and the Burning Man. The Man stands about 45' tall (now 90') and presides over the festivities. A city springs up, built on art and technology, but only with the materials and tools brought in by each individual from around the country. In the desert, survival is the primary objective - keeping hydrated, fed and sheltered are your own responsibilities. There is little that can be purchased or that you can rely on after poor planning. Days are long and hot -- restful, and time to build shelter, or art, or theme camps.
Groups return year after year to build their theme camps and contibute the outrageous tapestry of the society that instantly arising. Nights are exciting, jubilant and electric. Shows, concerts, presentations and art abound around every corner. And on the final night, the Man burns in a fiery celebration. What follows are a few glimpses of our journeys to the desert...
(We have got to find the time to upload 2002, 2003 & 2004!)
